Our History

First Presbyterian Church of Waxhaw was formed as a result of the merger of Bethel and Shiloh Presbyterian Churches on October 28, 1973. Rev. James Shelton, a native of Pittsburgh, PA was installed as pastor on August 22, 1982 and served until his retirement on December 31, 2017.

The church is affiliated with the Presbytery of Charlotte, the Synod of Mid-Atlantic and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We are governed by a Book of Order and a Book of Confessions which comprise the denomination’s Constitution.

The church’s governing body is the Session. Additionally, the church has a Deacon Board of ordained officers and Trustees that represent the corporate entity.

Church members serve the community as part of ministries within the church, by supporting broader and global initiatives and individual volunteerism.

The Reverend Veronica Cannon began serving the church as pastor on June 1, 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic. We will celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2023, believing that great things can be accomplished with God’s Grace and using the abilities and resources given to us. A more detail history can be found in the church’s physical Archives.
